29 12On December 3, industry leaders, innovators, and professionals came together at the BioInc@NYMC Biotechnology Incubator to celebrate Westchester County as a hub for life sciences innovation and growth. Hosted by Westchester County, the Westchester County Biosciences Accelerator (WCBA), and Builds Bio+, the event featured representatives from WMCHealth, Laronix, Quadrus Medical Technologies, Cognition Therapeutics, BJH Advisors LLC and the WCBA.
Deborah Novick, Westchester County’s director of entrepreneurship and innovation, explained how 160 life science companies in the county have generated $20 billion in economic activity over the past 10 years.
“Right here in Westchester, we have 20 percent of the private sector life sciences workforce in the state,” she said during the event. “We’re working very hard to help nurture more entities.”

EnergyTech University Prize Returns with $545K in Funding for Students and Faculty

The EnergyTech University Prize (EnergyTech UP) from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions is back for another round! The Student Track of this competition offers more than $400,000 in cash prizes to multidisciplinary teams that identifyhigh-potential energy technologies and pitch their strategies for commercialization, plus the opportunity to gain valuable entrepreneurial skills. The Faculty Track offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes to individuals and teams for the successful development and implementation of educational activities that engage students on energy technology commercialization and entrepreneurship topics at their institution. Interested competitors are encouraged to register their team for the 2025 competition and follow the prize to learn more about important deadlines, submission requirements, and prize rules.

Last week, we celebrated 15 years of NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Future Labs featuring several speakers who extolled the impact the network has had on the city. Among them was Tandon’s Vice Dean for Research, Linda Ng Boyle, who said:

“Since 2009, the Future Labs have supported startups in many sectors that include AI, emerging media, clean energy, and more recently, the offshore wind innovation hub. They have provided guidance, expertise, resources, and a community of like-minded people ... I am looking forward to not just 15 more years, but 50 more!”

Since 2009, the Future Labs have supported over 400 startups, with an impressive 93% success rate, and have helped raise $4.6 billion while creating nearly 10,000 jobs.
